The Canadian Flooring, Cleaning & Restoration Association has presented Ted Harding with the Jim Darling CFCRA lifetime achievement award at a special evening in Woodbridge, Ont.

Harding, known as the “Carpetologist,” is president at Kleen Kuip Supply Mart, a supplier of carpet cleaning supplies and equipment in Toronto, and an amateur magician.

Harding started in the dry cleaning business in the 1960s when the Toronto Board of Education started trade schools and was hired as an instructor. “I must say I was the one who got the best education out of it as I had plenty of time to further study the textile and cleaning business,” Harding says.

The band played on during the award festivities.

In the early seventies he left the education system and had a position with Dow Chemical traveling the world as a chemical and cleaning consultant training Dow distributors. “Again, I had an opportunity to meet people in the cleaning business in many countries and learned from them,” Harding says.

“As the eighties rolled in I saw the writing on the wall with wash-and-wear, and people dressing more casually knowing this would be a hit on the dry cleaning business. I noticed more and more wall to wall carpet being installed so I took the leap and resigned a fabulous position to go into the carpet steam cleaning business on my own.”

Harding, an amateur magician, had a pro entertain during the evening event.

At that time in Canada cleaners were basically using janitorial products on carpets. “I started bringing in specialties chemicals from the U.S., and before I knew it I had some of my competition asking me to bring in some for them,” Harding says.

“Before I knew it I was selling carpet specialty chemicals and equipment in the Canadian market and have never looked back.” Harding states that his company, Kleen Kuip, has become the largest specialty cleaning supply house to the end user and professional carpet cleaner in Ontario.
